Joy's Life Diet
I was watching the Today show and witnessed an awesome story with Sherrie Harris. She lives in Virginia Beach and she lost a whopping 156 pounds.

Sherrie Harris Loses 156 Pounds

Sherrie story begins with her telling us she is 38 years old, and a Health Insurance Educator in Virginia Beach. Sherrie has struggled with her weight since the age of ten. She claimed she tried every diet out there and would always lose weight, only to gain it back plus more.

Sherrie told us she had two things happen in one week that became her moments of truth. The first was when she saw some professional family photos they had taken. She said she couldn't believe it was herself in those pictures. The Sherrie had her annual physical done, and says she mortified when she seen the words "Morbidly Obese" written on her chart.

Sherrie's heaviest weight was 293 pounds, and she asked the doctor if she could get a referral for gastric bypass surgery, and her doctor told her that she would have to diet for 6 months and then they would discuss surgery.

Sherrie tried weight watchers again and lost 68 LBS., but then she was confronted by her daughter Courtney who asked her to please help her lose the weight. Sherrie said this is where everything changed, it was no longer just about herself, it was about setting a good example for her family.

Sherrie lost a total of 156 pounds, and now weighs 137 LBS., and daughter Courtney lost 65 LBS. Sherrie stated had it not been for her daughter asking her to help her, she is not sure she would be where she is today. Courtney learned low fat cooking, and took over the planning and cooking of meals.

Sherrie joined Today's Show Nutritionist Joy Bauer on stage this morning and when she walked out I was in awe, she looked absolutely amazing. Joy told us that Sherrie was one of the fortunate few that does not require excess skin removal, everything.

2. Flat Arch: Flexible show with heavy cushioning; The High Rollers: A person with a flat foot will wear down the outside of the heel of their shoe and the inside of the ball of the sole, and tend to have Plantar fasciitis, and need a shoe that is very stable.

3. High Arch: Stable show with strong arch support; The Low Rollers: People with a high arch, they tend to walk on the outside of their feet all the time, the outer part of the heel and the outside of the ball of the shoe. You would need a shoe with more cushion.

Jason The Vegetarian That Didn't Eat Vegetables

Can you be a vegetarian without eating vegetables? Dr. Oz says yes you can be a vegetarian without eating vegetables. He went on say say just because your eating vegetarian doesn't mean your eating healthy.

Jason hates vegetables, wouldn't eat them. His vegetarian diet consisted of carbs, soda's, and a pizza and soda freak. His diet consisted of a lot of pizza, pasta, cheese, a lot of carbs. They showed the front seat of his vehicle and the floor was literally piled up with empty soda bottles, and it was only a few days worth, he confessed he doesn't drink water or anything else, just soda.

Their evening meal consisted of two meals, one with meat and vegetables for his wife and kids, and he has pizza. Homemade pizza, frozen pizza, and takeout pizza, it doesn't matter...it's pizza, the carbs and cheese man.

Dr. Oz's Warning Signs Of Snot

Dr. Oz talks about how your snot can tell you if your healthy or not, and gives us hints on how our body is doing. In the video Dr. Oz talks about how snot works and what it's supposed to do for you. The snot is moved along on a little conveyor belt of tiny little hairs called cilia. The cilia move the snot to the back of your throat where you swallow it, which is what we are supposed to do if everything is running smooth.

If you have a problem with your snot, it will not drain properly back down your throat but drip out of your nose.

White snot means it is healthy snot

Yellow/Green snot means bacteria or a viral infection

Pink/Red snot means bleeding and damaged tissue -- dry air prevents are nose from being lubricated and the membranes crack in the nostrils.

Dr. Oz says we you have a lot of snot, congestion problems, there are solutions. Some foods make it worse, peppers make more snot, and perfumes. Dr. Oz suggested using a neti pot, and ginger teas. There is also antitoxidant inhalers available by prescription.

Grizz from 30 rock is 35 and in the prime of his life, and as Dr. Oz said he's hanging on by a thread. Grizz Chapman said he would never have thought that a little kidney could take him down. Grizz was 25 when diagnosed with hypertension. He said he wasn't scared in the beginning, and kept up with everyday activities, and it didn't really affect him.

Once he started feeling better after starting to take his medication, he stopped. Grizz stated it was the worse decision he could have ever made. He started gaining a lot of weight, having a lot of problems with his legs, but still felt strong as an Ox. He went to his primary doctor, and he said he had a lot of protein in his urine, and sent Grizz to a specialist.

At this time Grizz weighed close to 500 pounds. The kidney specialist told him he needed to lose weight, or you will be on dialysis in a matter of time. Not long ago he felt like he had the flu, he was shaking, trouble breathing, and he couldn't get up. They admitted him to the hospital, and gave him an emergency catheter, at that point Grizz says he was really scared and he didn't know if he was going to make it. They came back in and told him he had Renal Failure, and congestive heart failure. This is when everything started to change for him.

Dialysis started for Grizz, and he told everyone it's like you are going through it alone, and that he felt like he was in a very lonely place. Grizz told us that his biggest fear is dying to early, dying before his time.

Dr. Oz asked Grizz why did he not take his blood pressure medications all those years, and his response was that he started listening to his friends about the effects of the medications, and he didn't want it to happen to him.

Dr. Oz and Grizz talked about how Kidney Failure affects the family, and how he is always stuck on the dialysis machine.

Grizz Chapman of '30 Rock' needs kidney transplant

Grizz is diagnosed with END Stage Kidney Failure after ignoring his high blood pressure medications for almost a decade.
Grizz went on to tell us that Dialysis is tough, certain days everything is ok, then somedays he will cramp up really bad. Grizz said he doesn't want to live like that, and that at some point he wants to fix it, and got on the kidney transplant list.

Dr. Oz took Grizz to the truth tube, his blood pressure was 173/90...

His Kidney function was about 5 percent of normal. 5% means you don't have any kidney function. Dr. Oz told Grizz the average waiting list is 5 years for a kidney transplant. Dr. Oz told him he needed a Kidney Transplant.

Dr. Oz explained to Grizz at this point he is not even eligible yet because of his weight. Grizz's weight today was 378 pounds, he has already lost almost 100 pounds. Dr. Oz went on to tell him he needs to lose a lot more weight.

Janet Taylor joined Grizz and Dr. Oz and they went over the 3 step plan for Grizz.

1. Positive Attitude

2. Belief

3. Commitment

Kevin Brown, as the character Dot Com on 30 Rock, joined everyone on the stage today. Kevin says he is with Grizz every step of the way, and says he will lose the weight weight too. He vowed to lose 1 pound to every 10 pounds Grizz loses. He made everyone laugh, which was great for Grizz, because when you looks into Grizz's eyes, and the sorrow you see in them, breaks your heart. You can see everything he feels in his eyes.

Dot Com said he was really impressed how Grizz has opened up to everyone. Dot Com and Grizz talk late at nights when he is on dialysis, and Dot Com says they are very positive and realistic about the whole thing, and it is what it is.

Dr. Oz asked Grizz to become the face of Hypertension In America, Grizz said "LET'S DO IT"

Underlying diseases can cause progressive kidney disease, among them is diabetes and high blood pressure. The effects of hypertension such as stroke, heart attack and heart failure are more familiar. High blood pressure assaults arteries in the kidneys, where it damages small blood vessels and filtering structures.

It may take years before routine blood and urine tests give clues that the kidneys are beginning to fail. People with higher then normal blood pressure is at risk of developing kidney failure, particularly African Americans, who tend develop kidney disease even when blood pressure is only slightly elevated.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman's Article is on how to lower high blood pressure safely, quickly, and more effectively than drugs Reversing and Preventing High Blood Pressure

n a healthy adult, blood pressure should hover around 120/80. Doctors focus on these two numbers because any deviation sounds an alarm, particularly when it gets too high. When blood pressure exceeds 120-139/80-89 it is called pre-hypertension and anything over 140/90 is hypertension.

Dr. Oz's recommendations for Hypertension

Follow the Dash Diet – The DASH diet is a special diet that promotes consumption of fruits and vegetables (9 servings a day) and low-fat dairy products (2 servings a day), over red meat, saturated fat, sweets and sugary beverages. Adopting this diet can help cut off up to 15 points.

Limit Salt Intake – Reducing dietary sodium to less than 2400 mg sodium a day can drive your blood pressure down 8 points, especially if you are a salt-sensitive person. You will need to be a bit of a label sleuth because salt can hide in many canned, fast and processed foods.

Exercise on Most Days – Performing at least 30 minutes aerobic physical activity per day can help you drop up to 9 points.

Drink Less Alcohol – Men should drink less than 2 drinks per day and women (and lighter-weight men) just 1 drink per day (a drink is 12 oz beer, 5 oz wine or 1.5 oz 80-proof whiskey). Keeping within these limits can reduce blood pressure by 4 points.

Normalize Body Weight – Keeping your body mass index less than 30 can lower blood pressure enough to pull you out of the danger zone. If you are overweight and lose 20 lbs, you can reduce your blood pressure Even a modest weight loss trims points.

Relax and Breath – Listening to classical music, meditating and practicing slowed breathing can lower blood pressure.

Take Prescribed Medications – There are many types of medications to reduce blood pressure. Follow the advice of your doctor and take any prescribed medications as directed, even if you feel fine. High blood pressure can exist without symptoms so you may not know when you are spiking.

Perform Self-Checks Regularly – You can do this with an
at-home blood pressure measurement device
or machine at your local pharmacy.

Get Routine Examinations – Keep your scheduled appointment with your doctor for a periodic pressure check or to discuss any issues you may have with your medication.
There are many medications to choose from, if you experience side effects or if your current medication isn't producing the best result.

Other Risk Factors – Control cholesterol, diabetes and sleep apnea, all of which also contribute to high blood pressure.

Dr. Oz Reveals The 5 Food Mistakes You Never Want To Make -- 5 Potential Poisons

2. Unwashed Thermometer -- was your thermometer every time when rechecking the turkey to see if it's done.

Symptoms of a disease may not be the same in everyone. They can be silent, vague or atypical. And occasionally they mimic or hide behind other diseases.

Here are 3 instances where symptoms were misinterpreted, and misdiagnosed talked about today on Dr. Oz.
1. Symptoms: Dizziness, loss of leg control and vomiting
Diagnosis: Labyrinthitis, an inner ear condition that causes severe vertigo.
Actual Diagnosis: Stroke, a blood clot that gets lodged in the brain. A brain attack, as strokes are often called, produces different symptoms depending on where the clot affects the brain, and in turn, affects muscle control, speech, vision and balance.

Janet Stroke Symptoms

Janet was Dr. OZ's first guest was misdiagnosed today on Dr. OZ. Janet suddenly lost control of her legs, saying they were like noodles. Seconds later Janet said she dropped to her knees, and the room started spinning really fast and her vision went. Then the most intense nausea she ever experienced. She started vomiting uncontrollably, then had hiccups she couldn't stop. She thought she caught the stomach flu from her son, and sent her family off on a family outing without her. She was still vomiting, and couldn't see straight by the time they got back.

Her husband rushed her to the ER. Guess what the doctor's said she could have the flu. A CAT scan showed nothing abnormal, and diagnosed with an inner ear infection, given a prescription for nausea and sent home, and said she would be fine in 3 to 6 weeks.

Janet had a Stroke! Heart Attack, Stroke and Cardiac Arrest Warning Signs

Sally Hypothyroidism Symptoms

2. Symptoms: Unrelenting fatigue, weight gain, lethargy, irregular periods, cold sensitivity, hair loss and brittle nails.
Diagnosis: Perimenopause and depression.
Actual Diagnosis: Hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid gland that doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone. Misdiagnosing hypothyroidism can lead to heart disease, high LDL (bad) cholesterol, infertility, birth defects and depression.

Sally Was Dr. OZ's second guest misdiagnosed today. Sally said her symptoms came on slowly, complaints of being tired, and over time the exhaustion became debilitating. She would take multiple naps just to get through her day. Sally was also steadily gaining weight, and no matter what diet she tried she couldn't even drop a pound.

One doctor told her she was starting menopause, symptoms were irregular periods on top of the fatigue and weight gain, so to her the diagnosis made sense. Sally had Gastric Bypass Surgery, but even after losing 100 pounds, she was more tired than ever. She was cold all the time, couldn't complete a sentence, and taking 3 naps a day, her hair started to fall out, and her nails became brittle.

She got a second opinion and was diagnosed with depression, and handed her a prescription for anti depressants, which she refused to take.

Dr. OZ gave a us a tip on how to find out if you have a hypothyroidism problem by using enough hair that can be twisted and inserted in a straw. You take a section of hair wide enough that when twisted it could be inserted into a straw. You don't put the hair in a straw, but gently put tension on the base of the hair and slide your fingers from the root of the hair to the top. If there are more than 6 strands of hair that came out between your fingers could be a symptom and telltale sign of Hypothyroidism.

Donna Aortic Dissection Symptoms

3. Symptoms: After a C-section delivery, high blood pressure, swollen legs, and tightness/pain in the chest.
Diagnosis: Hypertension following pregnancy.
Actual Diagnosis: Aortic dissection, a weakening in wall of the largest blood vessel exiting the heart, creating a false channel of blood that can eventually tear under high pressure and stress. Misdiagnosing aortic dissection can lead to multiple organ failure, stroke, hemorrhage and death.

Donna was Dr. OZ's third misdiagnosed guest today. Dr. OZ says this is the number one deadly condition Doctor's overlooked and misdiagnosed in women is the heart. At 37 Donna gave birth to her first child, and have to have an emergency C section. Donna says something wasn't right with her, although everything was fine with the baby. Her blood pressure was high, 150/80, even though it was normal through her entire pregnancy.

Her legs became swollen beyond recognition, and the doctor's told her high blood pressure and swelling was a result of the surgery, and she would be fine in a few days. Shortly after she went home she found bruising on her neck, and the swelling in her legs didn't go down, then she experienced the worse pain of her life, from her lower ribs to her shoulder blades, and she began to hyperventilate. Her husband rushed her to the ER.

Symptoms And Risk Factors Of Aortic dissection

Do your homework, Organize your thoughts--make notes and take them to the doctor's office with you of all your symptoms. Describe your symptoms in detail, when symptoms occur, what makes you feel better and what makes you feel worse. If you have pain explain to the doctor if it is stabbing, dull, or does it only occur when you do certain things.

Dr. Oz Tattoo Removal Techniques

Dr. Oz discussed medical options for everyone on how to erase their permanent ink.
1. Creams: Anti-tattoo creams cost about $100 for a 2-month supply. However, their results are limited and are not a permanent removal.

2. Dermabrasion: This technique involves a dermatologist scraping the skin down to the tattoo. It’s very painful and it scars – it’s also expensive, costing several thousand dollars.
Cryotherapy: Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze and destroy the tattoo. There isn’t yet a way to target only the tattoo ink, so skin gets damaged and scarred in the freezing process.
Laser:

3. The newest technique on the market, laser targets tattoo particles without harming the skin. It breaks the tattoo into smaller pieces that immune cells can destroy – the tattoo goes away. Again, this treatment is expensive.

If you cannot afford these techniques you can always try Medical Makeup

Dr. Marty Becker And Dr. OZ Saving Your Life's Pet

The 3 things every pet owner should know to save their pet's life

1. Pet owners need to know how to do the Hymlick Maneuver -- The first thing you do is if you have a small dog you can actually grab him by the back legs and hold him up off the ground and kinda shake him like your trying to shake something out of a bag. For a larger dog like Rosie (Dr. OZ's dog) grab him by the back legs like a wheel barrow, and shake her. If that doesn't work on a medium or large dog, take the palm of your hand and hit them right between the shoulder blades five or six times right between the shoulder blades, and do it really hard.

With a small dog on your lap, you just take and put your fist up under her chest and pull towards your belly button and towards your head at the same time -- so it's in and up repeatedly.

Dr. Becker says the 3 things dogs choke on are toys, food, and women's underwear.

2. When dogs cut themselves, protect yourself by getting a mussel on the dog, stop the bleeding by using a pad or gauze, and don't take it off once you think your pet has stopped bleeding, leave it because the blood is beginning to clot. Once the blood has completely stopped clean the wound with KY jelly because it is easy to was off, then use an anti-bacterial soap, and then an antibiotic ointment, then a telfa pad. When wrapping your pets wound, start wrapping from the paw first, then up the leg.

3. CPR -- with a cat or a small dog on it's side, slip your hand under one side of the pet and the other hand on top, and squeeze together ten compressions, and then a mouth to snout CPR. For a medium size dog repeated pressure thrusts on the thickest part of the chest while they are on their side, the same goes for large dogs. For large dogs give ten compressions for every breath of air that you will administer from your mouth to their snout. You need to squeeze their mouth closed to perform this properly. Mouth To Snout resuscitation!
