Dr Oz The Warning Signs Of Bloating 3 Causes Of Toxic Bloating

WEDNESDAY - MARCH 31, 2010
TOXIC BLOATING
Toxic Bloating; HealthCorps Challenge; Chef Rocco Dispirito
Dr. Oz identifies three toxic conditions indicated by bloating. Students participating in Dr. Oz's HealthCorps program kick-start a School Challenge to get healthy. Flaking Out: The dirt behind dandruff. Healthy cookie cooking with Chef Rocco Dispirito.

Dr Oz Toxic Bloating

Enzymes process sugars, protein, and fat and help your body absorb them. If large molecules of food survive that step, they arrive in the large intestine (colon) where bacteria finish the job. As they work, those bacteria release gas and your intestines become distended, you could feel overly full and crampy.

Learn when this common symptom could be a sign of something serious. What seems like a harmless nuisance is a classic symptom of some of the most dangerous diseases that strike women. How do you know if what you’re feeling is a case of indigestion or a warning sign that something is seriously wrong with your health?

Bloating caused by use of sorbitol and fructose that are not easily digested in the small intestine, declining levels of exercise (which helps keep the gut working properly), and a loss of helpful intestinal bacteria due to the overuse of some antibiotics is uncomfortable, but harmless.

Dr Robun Chutkan joined Dr Oz today along with Madonna, Patricia and Stephanie. Dr Oz shocked us with what these 3 women thought was ordinary bloating.

Stephanie had terrible symptoms of bloating and pain like a knife sticking between her ribs since she was a teenager. As she got older the pain moved lower, and was always bloated, and whenever she had her period she would be doubled over in misery. One Specialist thought her Uterus was the problem, and desperate for relief she agreed to having a hysterectomy, when she really had Diverticulitis...Read More!

Patricia suffered from bloating for over 10 years, and was diagnosed with almost every gastrointestinal disorder out there, along with being diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Colitis. Fried foods, junk foods and even salads would send her to the bathroom. when she really had Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. (Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) refers to a condition in which abnormally large numbers of bacteria (at least 100,000 bacteria per ml of fluid) are present in the small intestine and the types of bacteria in the small intestine resemble more the bacteria of the colon than the small intestine. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is also known as small bowel bacterial overgrowth (SBBO).)

Madonna started feeling strange one day while on vacation with her husband. Out of nowhere she says she became very bloated and uncomfortable. Her symptoms only got worse when they returned home. Within a week she couldn't fit into any of her clothes. Her Doctor scheduled an Ultra Sound but she would have to wait two months. Madonna ballooned to the point that couldn't walk and she looked 9 months pregnant, then her husband rushed her to the emergency room. She had Ovarian Cancer!

Dr Chutkan explained why women who have Ovarian Cancer has bloating. Bloating that is persistent where you notice your abdominal girth where your waistline is expanded and it's not going down could be a sign that there is a mass there. It can be Ovarian Cancer, it can also be Colon Cancer or Uterine Cancer. There is an actual mass pressing on the bowels causing things to expand. Hormonal changes with Ovarian Cancer can contribute to the boating too, so there are two ways that can work.

Dr Oz 3 Ways Your Bloating Can Be Toxic

Bloating warning signs - The 3 signs of toxic bloating

1. Diverticulitis

When the large intestine does its work (squeezing bowel movements through the body and out), sometimes the lining is pushed out into little pouches, creating a condition called diverticulosis. If fecal matter gets waylaid in those pouches, an infection can set in causing diverticulitis, a much more serious condition. Once an infection has begun in your intestine, there is a risk it can rupture into your abdominal cavity and cause a life-threatening infection.

Symptoms of Diverticulosis

Diverticulosis may not progress to diverticulitis and cause a problem, and it often does not have symptoms. But these signs may indicate that you have diverticulosis and are therefore more prone to diverticulitis.
Difficulty achieving a complete bowel movement
Frequent bowel movements that are pellet-shaped
Cramping in the lower left quadrant of your abdomen (not severe)
Bloating

Symptoms of Diverticulitis

In addition to the symptoms of diverticulosis, signs of diverticulitis include
Severe pain (the kind that makes you wonder if you should go to the emergency room)
Bloating that persists for weeks at a time rather than being intermittent
Constipation
Blood in your stool

2. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

Your small intestine absorbs the nutrients from food through villi, small projections on the intestinal wall. If bacteria grow in your small intestine (where it normally doesn’t hang out) they can destroy villi, blocking the absorption of nutrients. Then larger pieces of food once again find their way to the small intestine where those gas-producing bacteria go to work on them, and, bingo, you’ve got bloating and diarrhea.

Symptoms of Bacterial Overgrowth

Bloating, particularly after meals
Fatigue
Bacterial growth in the large intestine isn’t widely understood in the medical community, so you may have to ask your doctor to look for it. Some offices will have breath tests that detect the presence of bacteria or they can sample fluid from the small intestine and analyze it.

3. Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer used to be called the silent killer, because it exhibits few symptoms until it has progressed to an untreatable state. But doctors now recognize that if you listen carefully, the disease whispers a few warning signs. A recent article in the British Medical Journal found that bloating is the most predictive one. When ovaries turn cancerous they often swell, causing a swelling in the belly that resembles bloating. Hormonal changes that occur during ovarian cancer can also cause bloating. One in 40 times bloating will mean ovarian cancer.

What are the Symptoms Of Ovarian Cancer?

Significant changes in your menstrual cycle
Persistent bloating (especially if your girth increases and does not go down)
Postmenopausal bleeding
Frequent urination
Rectal bleeding

The Bottom Line on Bloating
If you experience any of the following symptoms with bloating (or experience bloating that lasts longer than a week), make an appointment with your doctor to get thoroughly checked out:
Pain
A change in bowel habits
Weight loss
Blood in your stool

Dr Oz talked with a studio audience member who has been cancer free from Ovarian Cancer for 5 years, and other signs and symptoms for Ovarian Cancer. The 3 biggies were Boating, Pain in the abdomen and or pelvic area, not just where the ovary is. The third symptom was a different style of eating food, you feel like your already full sooner than normal, and foods aren't agreeing with you anymore.

Dr Oz And Rick Mahorn Weight Loss Program

Rick Mahorn NBA Champion asked Dr Oz for his help today. After leaving his NBA career and getting married and having kids, Rick got off track. Rick comes from a long line of family heart disease and he wants to break that cycle. He lost his Mom, Sister and Nephew to heart Disease.

Rick's Numbers In the Truth Tube;
Rick Mahorn is 6'10"
Weight was 392 pounds
BMI was 41
B/P 142/108
Creatinine 1.4

Mahorn was drafted 35th overall by the Washington Bullets in the 1980 NBA Draft. His career ended in 1999.
Washington Bullets (1980–1985)
Detroit Pistons (1985–1989)
Philadelphia 76ers (1989–1991)
Virtus Roma (1991–1992)
New Jersey Nets (1992–1996)
Detroit Pistons (1996–1998)
Philadelphia 76ers (1999)

Dr Oz brought out John Salley to get Rick Mahorn onto a healthy lifestyle Plan. John Salley became a Vegetarian back in 91, and working on being a Vegan, and always working on being in shape.

John Salley said he wants to help save Rick's life with his weight loss intervention, and be his coach in his 3 Step Action Plan. He started off by telling Rick to start of the day with at least on green meal.

Dr Oz John Salley's 3 Step Plan

Now you get back in the game with NBA star John Salley’s Back to the Glory Days Action Plan. Your glory days don’t have to be a thing of the past. Get back in shape. Get back to being your best self. Follow this Dr Oz 3-step plan John Salley lives by.

Step 1: Go Green
Commit to eating at least one green meal a day. Select high-quality leafy greens and lots of colorful vegetables. A good green meal is high in fiber and antioxidants, and will help you feel better, lose weight, and boost your mood.

John Salley’s Favorite Go-Green Salad

Salad ingredients: kale, baby spinach, beets, heirloom tomatoes, white onions, persian cucumbers, avocado, sweet chili peppers and chia seeds (mood boosters)
Dressing ingredients: olive oil and balsamic vinegar. John Salley was very specific on the kale in his green salad, it has more beta carotene, 10 times more than in carrot's or broccoli.

Dr. Oz’s Go-Green Suggestions

Spinach Raspberry Flax Seed Oil Shake
Dr. Oz’s Green Drink

Step 2: Binge Prevention

Then John Salley said soak your nuts, which had everyone laughing. Dr Oz soaks his nuts, He soaks his nuts and soon you will soak your nuts too. It takes the enzyme off so you can digest them, and John carries around his own sea salt around everywhere.

Depriving yourself of snacks between meals is the easiest way to sabotage a healthy diet. Instead of starving yourself and reaching for the easiest available empty-calorie snack, opt for sustainability. Fuel your body throughout the day. Don’t go more than 2-3 hours without eating a meal or snack. This will speed up your metabolism and prevent binge-eating. Eat 3 healthy meals and 2-3 healthy snacks a day.

John Salley's Favorite Healthy Snacks

Apple slices with real peanut butter
Low-fat granola
Vegetables with hummus
Walnuts and almonds (soaked in water; soaking makes them easier to digest)
Blue corn tortilla chips and fresh low-sodium salsa

Step 3: Posture Perfect
Try pilates. Pilates is low-impact, and helps to strengthen your core and tone your muscles. It is a rewarding way to ease into an everyday exercise program.

In addition to these lifestyle changes, make sure to add 45 minutes of cardio to your day. Sweat off those old habits and get yet another step closer to reliving your glory days now.

Dr Oz How Old Is Your Hair

Daily stress, styling, diet and genetics are just some of the factors that determine the health of your hair.

Dr. Oz tells you how to undo years of wear and tear with these hair-repair remedies. Depending on your lifestyle and genetics, your hair may be older than you think. Today Dr Oz did the hair test and had some secret solutions to healthy hair. The food that Dr Oz said was good for your hair is salmon. Salmon has Omega 3's in it, and the top food for damaged hair was banana's, mashed banana's to be exact. Smooth puree of banana's turns out to be a very effective home remedy.

So the fun begins as Dr Oz applies puree'd banana's to the hair to the two ladies from the studio audience, and then the ladies lathered up Dr. Oz's hair with the mashed banana's. Set the timer he says for 15 minutes, and the potassium in the banana's helps soothes damaged hair.

Dr Oz Carpal Tunnel Therapies

Dr. Oz explains the causes of carpal tunnel syndrome and solutions to ease the pain.

If you work with your hands every day you are at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome. Dr Oz goes on to say carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), by diabetes, pregnancy, obesity, big breasts, all these risk factors can make it worse. Two reasons why carpal tunnel can happen are, one the tunnel itself gets smaller, and what's in the tunnel gets bigger.

One solution Dr Oz used on stage for Carpal Tunnels syndrome was a Paraffin Wax Bath. The paraffin coats the hand and seals in the moisture and the warmth.

The second solution he tried was with a technique called a Wrist Guard that will keep your arm in a very comfortable position, or you can put on at night. Dr Oz says these are both very effective.

We also found out today that June 11th is Dr. Oz's Birthday and Dr Oz will be 50 Years Old. And the one food for health Dr Oz eats every day is Walnuts.

Due to the spread of cancer Steve lost his lower lip and would need skin grafts to replace it, now he is ready for dental implants and best of all Steve quit smoking!. Watch the video with Steve On Dr. Oz.

Attack of the Plaque

Could plaque on your teeth cause problems for your heart?

Sonya joins Dr Oz in this segment on Attack Of Plaque. He had her put her hand a a large container of white substance that she said felt like snot, quite an amusing Lady she was. Dr. Oz explores the perils of poor dental hygiene – including heart disease. Dr Jonathan Levine says there 9 billion bacteria in the mouth, and form and colonize bad bacteria around the teeth. Keeping a healthy balance of good and bad bacteria is dependent upon a daily routine of brushing – and – flossing. Says plaque forms twenty minutes after we eat.

When don't remove the calcified plaque properly, and the tissue gets up around the calcified plague, the tissue gets very inflamed. Then you go from a situation of periodontal disease with associated gum inflammation and bone loss to more of a cardiovascular problem because this bacteria load nows gets into the circulatory system. Dr oz said that is why when they find someone with a heart attack or a stroke, they check their teeth.

Prevention For Plaque

Along with brushing and flossing to control plaque, eat an apple. An apple will take of the plaque and the stain of our teeth. In addition to that add in lots of fruits and leafy vegetables such as spinach, cauliflower, it does a great job of getting rid of acidic in our mouth and raising the ph so the bad bacteria can't grow. Excessive dental plaque can lead to serious problems.

Watch the animated video on the various stages of periodontal disease and how plaque can contribute to heart disease.

Dr Oz and Dave Liebermen get together today with this healthy recipe with a secret ingredient. Linguine and Quinoa Meatballs With Tangy Tomato Sauce has become a hit with Dr Oz and he says it is going to be a part of the OZ household.

Dr Oz What Are You Flushing Down The Drain

TUESDAY - MARCH 23, 2010
FLUSHED!: DR. OZ INVESTIGATES HOW WHAT YOU FLUSH IS MAKING AMERICA SICK
Toileted Toxins; Overweight Parents; Twitching; Diabetic Diet Plan; Diet Detective
Dr. Oz investigates the harmful toxins that get flushed into our water system. A 20-year-old man asks Dr. Oz to help save his morbidly obese parents. Are you a twitching time bomb? Two kids turn their mom into the Diet Detective for her unhealthy cooking habits. Dr. Oz’s 3-step plan to maintaining a healthy diabetic lifestyle.

Dr Gary Ginsberg and Dr Alan Greene joined Dr Oz today on the subject "What your flushing down the drain". We are flushing chemicals, toxins, antibiotics literally down the drain and into rivers and streams and even our water supply.

What it's Doing to the Environment?
In river basins around the country, the United States Geological Survey has found fish with both female and male sex organs. Intersex frogs are also popping up all over. And experts have found evidence of chemicals called endocrine disruptors, such as atrazine (an herbicide) and Bisphenol-A (BPA) in the country’s water supplies.

What’s Happening to Us?
Breast cancer rates are increasing, girls are entering puberty earlier, sperm counts and testosterone levels are falling drastically, and certain genital abnormalities(smaller size penis in boys) are on the rise.

What are Endocrine Disruptors?
These chemicals alter the actions of hormones in our body, which can hurt us in 2 ways. First, they can block our hormones from acting as they normally would, and, secondly, they can act like hormones triggering effects that may include early onset puberty in adolescents.

Phthalates
These difficult-to-pronounce ingredients help fragrance linger on the body after you have applied a lotion or body cream to your skin. They’re also found in toys, floor coverings, detergent, soaps, nail polish, and shampoos. Unfortunately, they mimic the hormone estrogen and have been linked to reproductive problems in rodents, such as lower testosterone and fetal malformation. Often they are not listed on beauty products, so the best rule of thumb is to avoid any products with fragrance.

Parabens
Found in moisturizing shampoos and body lotions, parabens are the most widely used preservatives in the beauty product industry, and they also act similar to estrogen in our bodies. One study found parabens in the breast cancer tissue of 19 out of 20 women studied; experts worry there could be a connection.

Use these chemicals as a litmus test for a healthy product. If you see them listed on the label (often as methylparaben, butylparaben, or propylparaben), it shows that the manufacturer is not concerned about limiting exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Bisphenol-A (BPA)You may have heard about BPA, the chemical used to make hard plastics, line cans, and create carbonless receipts. It’s proven to raise the risk of breast cancer in rats and the FDA has raised an alarm about the potential harm BPA can cause; Connecticut even banned its use in children’s products.

Ninety-three percent of us have BPA in our bodies. We live with it, and we excrete it when we go to the bathroom, sending the chemical into the environment.

1. Drink water from stainless steel bottles
2. Avoid plastics with the numbers 3, 6, and 7 on the bottom
3. Never heat plastic in the microwave (even if it says it is microwave safe)
4. Choose frozen and fresh produce over canned
5. Use BPA-free baby bottles
6. Avoid any products that contain fragrances; opt for those that get their scent from essential oils
7. Stay away from parabens
8. Choose products that are paraben and phthalate free

Dr Oz says; Under-eye bags and dark eye circles can sometimes be caused by allergies. Try an antihistamine first. Dr. Oz explains the causes of sagging neck skin, also known as jowls or the “turkey neck,” and what a procedure called laser liposuction can do to reverse this sign of aging.

Dr Kenneth Rothaus Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who has led research the new liposuction procedure that uses lasers to heat the fat which makes it easier to remove joins Dr Oz today talking about how light waves can tighten the skin for turkey neck and fat in the jowls. You can see in the video where Dr Rothaus does the the lipsuction laser on Angie a patient who complained about the sagging skin on her neck. The results of this procedure that takes about 20 minutes will last for years with skin tightening and costs approximately 2500 to 3000 dollars.

The Deadly game Your Kids Are Playing The Choking Game

Is your teen playing this deadly game? Dr. Oz exposes the warning signs and symptoms. The choking game also known as Rush, purple dragon, space monkey, funky chicken, and cloud nine, but it is best known as the choking game. Would you know if your child was playing the choking game.

Could you one day walk into your child's room and find him dead. An autopsy could say it is suicide, because a child being found with a make shift noose around his neck, but it's not. Finding a knotted scarf and ties in your child's room, a belt hanging from the door knob. Maybe your child complained of headaches, his eyes bloodshot, these can all be signs of a deadly adolescent practice known as the choking game.

What Is The Choking Game

The choking game can be played alone or with other kids. The point is to suffocate on purpose by tying a noose, or placing hands around the neck, blood flow is blocked to the brain, after a few seconds the child feels momentarily light headed. When the neck is released blood floods the brain creating a sense of euphoria a natural legal high, except this feeling is actually the brain dying, and so are the kids as a result of playing the choking game.

Some estimates puts the number at over 1000 kids a year losing their life this way. The danger may be spreading virtually over the internet. Once study found 65 video's of the choking game posted in just eleven day period.

In the video's Dr G explains about how the kids pass out, can have seizures, and senseless death from plating the choking game. People have been playing this game for years at parties choking each other out to get that high. Dr G says they have seen kids come in dead from this resurgence in the last 5 to 10 years, because these kids are doing it alone and doing it with ligatures which is very deadly.

The choking game is not for sexual practices, it is done to get a high. These are young kids just trying to get a cheap high. With the choking game Dr G says you see horizontal marks around the neck, They are using noose's, and they pass out and can't let that noose loose it just stays tight and they die. Suicides marks are more of an inverted V because you are suspending.

David Quimby and Sherry Williams joined Dr Oz today to tell their story how they lost their son Alex Quimby to the choking game just three months ago. Alex's father came home to his condo one day and seen Alex's sneakers were by the door and knew he was home. While calling out to Alex and no response David went to open his son's door and it was locked, once getting in the bedroom he found Alex's lifeless body in the closet with a belt around his neck, and anchored of the closet rod. When his father raised his body up he found his feet were still touching and the belt became immediately loose around his neck.

Alex's parents could not believe he committed suicide, and their family physician told them they needed to investigate what is called the choking game, as neither one of them had ever heard of it. David talked with Alex's friends and they told David yes he did play the choking game and they played it with them. Alex's mom recalled trying going into his room once and seeing the belt being tossed to the floor.

Dr. G, Medical Examiner-Discovery health, explains what happens to the body during the Choking Game and identifies the signs of a Choking Game death.
