CAN ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS CAUSE CANCER, WEIGHT GAIN, ARE SWEETENERS ADDICTIVE?
As always today was another very informative day on the Dr. Oz Show. Today Oz set the record straight on artificial sweeteners, he has brand new information that these butter and sugar alternatives may be linked to cancer, weight gain and alzheimer’s.
Did you know that the average American consumes 24 pounds of artificial sweeteners each year, now that's a lot when you think about it. The thing about artificial sweeteners is that they leave you feeling hungrier and craving more food. We use fake butter for everything from baking to flavoring popcorn (one of our go to snacks microwave popcorn) – but could it be bad for our brain because of the additive Diacetyl.

Let's start with what Dr Oz had to say about Butter Substitutes: Imitation butter flavoring contain a chemical Diacetyl which can be linked to Alzheimer's.
Diacetyl (also called butanedione or 2,3-butanedione, molecular formula C4H6O2) is a natural byproduct of fermentation and is also synthesized by chemical manufacturers. Diacetyl gives butter and certain food flavorings a distinctive buttery flavor and aroma. Food flavorings containing diacetyl are used in microwave popcorn and other snack foods, pet foods, candies, baked goods, and other food products.
Employees at microwave popcorn plants and a flavorings manufacturing facilities have experienced eye, nasal, and/or upper respiratory irritation and/or burns, in some cases, skin and eye burns have required medical treatment.
With butter substitutes manufactures put this chemical DIACETYL into foods to give it it’s rich buttery flavor. Diacetyl is cheese, crackers, baking mixes, microwave popcorn, margarine, shortening, cooking sprays. Apparently diacetyl is in Chardonnay.
Dr Oz says it will decades to find out if artificial butter is playing a role in Alzheimer’s but why take the chance. Cut back on these products because it is better safe than sorry!
Check the ingredients for artificial flavorings before buying, it won’t necessarily say it contains diacetyl, if doesn’t say it hasn’t contain dactyl just assume it’s in there. Look for plant sterols in the ingredients.
Dr Oz says eat real butter (whipped butter) The alternative to artificial butter flavoring is whipped butter. Half the calories and half the fat!
I never switched in the first place like so many others who believed margarine was better for you, now you know, eat real butter, whipped butter Dr Oz says.
Dr Oz: Artificial Sugar Weight Gain
Dr Oz stated that artificial sweeteners cause weight gain, new research shows that artificial sweeteners may be contributing to a nation wide epidemic called metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of 3 things, high blood pressure, excess belly fat and insulin resistance, a triple threat.
Oz goes to explain that by consuming artificial sweeteners in our coffee, drinking diet sodas, and other numerous products it puts our pancreas out of whack which causes our body to crave more sugar which then in turn leads to weight gain and addiction to having more sugar.
By just having one soda a day with artificial sweeteners is correlated to metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, excess belly fat and insulin resistance.
Dr Oz: Do Artificial Sweeteners Cause Cancer?
It's the question we all ask because we hear so much about artificial sweeteners cause cancer. Well today Dr Oz says it is not true.
Artificial sweeteners do not cause cancer, but the belly fat that causes metabolic syndrome is also correlated with some big cancer risks including colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, endometrium cancer and breast cancer especially post menopausal women.

Sugar Alcohols: The other big health problems caused by artificial sweeteners, is digestive problems. Your diarrhea could be due to using sweeteners. New reports are linking sugar substitutes to everyday digestive problems. Sugar substitutes are sugar alcohols gives foods that sugary flavor without any sugar, there are chemicals in low sugar substitutes is really a laxative which in turn can be the cause of diarrhea, stomach cramps, gas and bloating.
Are You Peeing A Lot? Sweeteners can cause the bladder to spasm constantly which causes you to constantly go pee, even one packet of sweetener can make you pee more than you are supposed too.
Dr Oz gave us a few ideas on how to cut back on artificial sweeteners and how much artificial sweeteners can you have a day. The 3 R’s, reduce, replace, renew.
Reduce to one sweetener a day – one diet soda and one packet of sugar substitute per day. Replace sweeteners with Stevia it’s calorie free (stevia is much sweeter than sugar) When buying stevia make sure it just says stevia in the ingredients. You can use 3-4 packets of stevia a day.
Renew Your Taste Buds – give yourself what nature intended like raw buckwheat honey, it has a very strong taste so you don’t need a lot to sweeten something. The secret here is your calories are your energy and with the buckwheat honey as opposed to the soda will give you the get go energy.So there you have it, sweeteners can cause weight gain, and buttery substitutes may be connected to Alzheimer's and No sweeteners do not cause cancer, it the belly fat from the sugar substitutes that can attribute health hazards.
