What Is The Epstein-Barr Virus

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), also known as "The Kissing Disease" is a common human virus that causes infectious mononucleosis and plays a role in the emergence of two rare forms of cancer: Burkitt's lymphoma, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Epstein-Barr virus is the most common viral infection in humans. It can lay dormant for years and cause crippling long-lasting fatigue and exhaustion. But most people never know that they have been infected.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBV belongs to the family of herpes viruses(Human Herpes Virus 4) including those that cause cold sores, genital herpes, chickenpox and shingles.

Dr. Oz investigates the virus that could be responsible for your exhaustion. Epstein-Barr virus(EPV) is the most common viral infection in humans. It can lay dormant for years and cause crippling long-lasting fatigue. Most people never know that they have been infected with EPV. in the US, 95% of all adults will be infected by age 40, and 50% of all children by age 5.

Many people don't realize they have been infected because they never feel sick. Once infected however, you harbor the virus for good. There is growing concern about the aftereffects of an EBV infection; a number of chronic diseases, including some types of cancers, have been linked to this infection.

When infection with EBV occurs during adolescence or young adulthood, it causes infectious mononucleosis 35% to 50% of the time. Many children become infected with EBV, and these infections usually cause no symptoms or are indistinguishable from the other mild, brief illnesses of childhood. In the United States and in other developed countries, many persons are not infected with EBV in their childhood years.

Symptoms Of Infectious Mononucleosis

Symptoms of infectious mononucleosis(Mono) are fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph glands. Sometimes, Fatigue, Malaise (a vague feeling of discomfort)a swollen spleen or liver involvement may develop. Heart problems or involvement of the central nervous system occurs only rarely, and infectious mononucleosis is almost never fatal.

EBV also establishes a lifelong dormant infection in some cells of the body's immune system. A late event in a very few carriers of this virus is the emergence of Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, two rare cancers that are not normally found in the United States. EBV appears to play an important role in these malignancies, but is probably not the sole cause of disease.

Most individuals exposed to people with infectious mononucleosis have previously been infected with EBV and are not at risk for infectious mononucleosis. In addition, transmission of EBV requires intimate contact with the saliva (found in the mouth) of an infected person. Many healthy people can carry and spread the virus intermittently for life. These people are usually the primary reservoir for person-to-person transmission. For this reason, transmission of the virus is almost impossible to prevent.

Clinical diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis is suggested on the basis of the symptoms of fever, sore throat, swollen lymph glands, and the age of the patient. Usually, laboratory tests are needed for confirmation.

symptoms related to infectious mononucleosis caused by EBV infection seldom last for more than 4 months. When such an illness lasts more than 6 months, it is frequently called chronic EBV infection.

Findings of late is EBV's role in the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis (MS). There are a few things that link the MS to EBV infections.

1. Nearly everyone with MS tests positive for EBV
2. People clear of the virus don't get the disease
3. High levels of EBV antibodies precede MS symptoms and flare-ups
4. Infectious mononucleosis doubles the risk for MS
5.EBV infection is probably not the sole cause for this complex disease and it is likely that outside factors trigger MS.

The only way to know for sure if an active EBV infection is the cause of fatigue is to get tested.

Laurie and Geraldine shared their stories of dealing with EPV. geraldine says that it sucks the life right out of you, and leaves you with no desire and don't care.

Laurie's story started off by saying she always felt so exhausted all the time, she decided to go to the dr, and found out she had a tumour in her chest the size of a football, it was Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Laurie is convinced it was due to having EPV. Laurie is now cancer free, but is still fatigued all the time.

Dr Oz tested everyone in the audience today and 76% were Vitamin D deficient. Dr. Sandra Fryhofer said there is not enough Vitamin D in orange juice and milk, and recommends 1000.00 IU's of Vitamin D-3 a day.

Dr Oz and Meth Addict Samantha

Samantha returned to the Dr Oz show today and proud to say that she has been clean for 107 days now. Samantha had been a meth Addict for 12 years, and is currently following her treatment program at the Caron Treatment Center. Dr oz confronted her and asked her if she would go back to finish the 2 weeks left on her program and she replied yes with a big smile.

Brad Lamm did a home intervention with Samantha and her two sons, Ex husband David, current husband Johnny and her mom. Samantha and Johnny both said how hard it is to have a home with two addicts. He said there were times he came so close to killing her because she was so abusive to him.

The 3 things Cheryl Knepper asked of her was;
1. Be consistent and attend all of her 12 step program
2. Consistent with her out patient councelling
3. Return to rehab(Caron Renaissance) and finish the two weeks which she agreed to.

Tomatoes

Dr oz played a game today called "Guess The food Rules" with Mike and Gina. Eat tomatoes to increase prostate health, because tomatoes are rich in lycopene. The body best absorbs lycopene through tomato pasta sauce. 10 tablespoons a week is great for the prostate, and the lycopene you need.

Eat foods rich in omega 3's to increase fertility rates. Dr oz says the food with the most Omega 3's in it are walnuts.
