The #1 Killer Of Women In America-Heart Attacks

Today on Dr. Oz A guest sat with Dr. Lori Mosca and Dr. Oz and talked about a mother you died from a Heart Attack. She had gone to the doctor numerous times and was diagnosed with heartburn, and given a prescription. The back to the doctor's again and given another prescription. Then she ended up at the hospital emergency and having an EKG done, she was still sent home diagnosed with heart burn, although she she kept saying she felt like she was having a heart attack. She DIED shortly after being sent on her way, because the doctors didn't even know the signs and symptoms of a woman's heart attack!

Dr. Mosca says if we learn the symptoms of a heart attack we can help save our own lives. Women's symptoms are usually dismissed, as compared to men. We experience different symptoms for different parts of the heart affected.

We usually envision a heart attack victim grabbing at their chest. Women's symptoms are usually less obvious. Women feel the same pressure in their chests as men do, but many women experience vague symptoms that are not immediately attributed to a heart attack. More women die every year of heart disease than men.

5 Symptoms Of A Heart Attack That Women Should Never Ignore

  • Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Pain radiating down the arm, shoulders, jaw, neck, and back, particularly on the left side
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness, sweating, weakness, overwhelming fatigue
  • Feeling of impending doom
  • Headache, blurry vision, lightheadedness, feeling faint, may include breaking out in a cold sweat
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms such as indigestion, nausea and vomiting
  • Coughing and palpitations

What Women need To Know About Heart Attacks

When experiencing heart attack symptoms it is most often described as a tightness or pressure across the chest. But the pain can feel like something else such as a stomach cramp, indigestion, a headache or pulled muscle.
Learn the signs, but remember this: Even if you're not sure it's a heart attack, have it checked out (tell a doctor about your symptoms). Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Don’t wait more than five minutes to call 9-1-1 or your emergency response number.
American Heart Association
Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of a heart attack. It occurs when the arteries are clogged with plaque deposits that prevent blood from flowing freely. An accumulation of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other debris, the plaque can partially or totally block the flow of blood and promote blood clots. Over a period of time, this plaque thickens in a process known as atherosclerosis. Clots can then travel to vessels of the heart, lungs and brain. When left untreated, atherosclerosis can lead to a heart attack, stroke and death. Dr. Oz says take 2 baby aspirins if you have risk factors, plus have a friend to talk to about how you feel and the symptoms you are experiencing.

Risk Factors For Heart Disease

  • Smoking tobacco
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • High blood pressure
  • Low HDL and high LDL cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Stress
