In 2006 just when Sheryl Crow was at the top of her game was told she had breast cancer just 5 days after her 44th birthday and changed every aspect of her life. Her tumour was detected early through a routine mammogram, and fought the cancer with a lumpectomy and radiation therapy. Within a year Sheryl was cancer free which led her to be an advocate for routine mammograms.
Sheryl is a breast cancer survivor who celebrates everyday of her life with her son Wyatt.
Sheryl talks with Dr Oz about you never expect to hear the word cancer especially when your healthy, and how her cancer diagnosis led her to be a spokes person for cancer awareness to tell women know your family history. Sheryl does not have a family history of breast cancer which led Dr Oz to say that only 20% of women who get breast cancer have a family history.
Dr Kristi Funk helped Sheryl through the whole ordeal and says finding breast cancer at a curable stage - stage 0 or 1. These two types of cancers are 98% curable. The best way to find an early stage cancer is through mammography. Dr Funk went on to say Mammograms have proven time and time again to decrease the death rate from breast cancer - a 30% decrease in death. Mammograms can be the difference in life or death.
Dr Oz had a crew of people in the audience wearing pink T shirts who are all fellow survivors. Sheryl told Dr oz she is in an airport almost everyday and each time someone finds her to share their story of themselves or someone they know and breast cancer.
Dr Oz asks Sheryl "How Did You Beat Breast Cancer", she said she did exactly what her Dr told her to do, have the lumpectomy, the radiation treatment, Sheryl also did acupuncture, drank the stinky teas, a long time meditator.
Dennis Slamon "Stand Up To Cancer" is as Sheryl says one of the medical hero's in the medical profession that believes that one size doesn't fit all when it comes to breast cancer. he explains the molecular biology that lets them look at the molecular makeup of breast cancers, and that tailored therapy works and that's what makes the difference in the outcome of breast cancer.
Dr Oz asked Sheryl what is it that she does differently now in her life, Sheryl says once being diagnosed with breast cancer you look at life differently from that moment on. Learning to say no might be the most important thing you may have to learn to do.
